DeWitt NHS Invitation Criteria
NHS candidates are invited to become members based on the evaluation of certain criteria connected to Character, Service, Leadership, and Scholarship. A Faculty Council consisting of five voting faculty members appointed annually by the principal evaluates these criteria. The chapter advisor is a non-voting sixth member of the Faculty Council. The Faculty Council evaluates criteria in an objective manner by reviewing candidate scores without disclosing candidate names; the candidates' names are withheld and replaced by an ID number. The following is a list and description of said criteria:
Cumulative Grade Point Average
An NHS candidate shall have a cumulative GPA of no less than 3.5.
An NHS candidate shall have completed at least 10 community service hours.
An NHS candidate shall have held a leadership office in a school or community organization, or the candidate can turn in a letter of recommendation from an advisor highlighting leadership experience outside of an official office. Candidates shall also have participated in at least six extracurricular activities.
An NHS candidate shall have no disciplinary infractions higher than Level II in their Sophomore or Junior years. Level IV offenses during a candidate's Freshman year will be considered on a case by case basis. An NHS candidate shall have no criminal record besides minor traffic violations.
An NHS candidate shall average an essay score of no less than 3.5. Two Faculty Members read each essay-- the essay does not include the candidate's name -- and each essay is given a score from 1-4 based on the essay rubric attached to this packet. The scores are then averaged and reported to the Faculty Council who does not see the names of the candidates.
An NHS candidate shall accurately complete the NHS Information Form including receiving the advisor's signature after attending the parent/candidate meeting.
If all of these criteria are met, the candidate will be invited to become a member of the DeWitt chapter of the National Honor Society.
